THIS. But I don't think the directors are coming from this angle with their critique. My issue is that the narratives are consistently formulaic. These movies come from the point of, let's make a hit, what about the mech, franchise, crossover, etc., never from how can we create the best movie. I suppose my issue isn't superhero movies; I love the original superman (warts and all), I love batman, Tim Burton's, and then the Reboot -- what I am is weary with why can't we have new heroes with new journeys contending with complex issues. A superhero who is engaging with real racism or rape or complex issues. The more human the character complexity a superhero has-- texture, the greater our investment. Good and evil, success and failure aren't black or white; it's also sloppy, ugly, and so many other things; the cookiecutterness of how the superhero genre is now can be disappointing. But I believe nuanced superhero films will arrive just like it in horror and science fiction. And in the end, it is up to us to take away what we wish from a movie. It can not be all things to everyone.
